THE INITIATIVE

FOR CREATIVE ARTS

ABOUT TIFCA

The Initiative for Creative Arts (TIFCA) started in the spring of 2012 with the vision of providing the youth (ages 7-21) of Birmingham, Alabama with an accessible program to self-express by way of beat making/music production, and creative-tech. Students explore hip hop production using computer technology, midi controllers, beat machines, and recording equipment.  The Initiative for Creative Arts provides music programs that fosters creativity, teach entrepreneurial, leadership, and life skills; building brighter futures through music, art, and technology.

Our workshops help youth to develop musically, of course, but they also have personal and social outcomes too. We support young people to build their confidence, resilience, and self-esteem, to make friends, and build community, to develop essential skills they need, get support to be able to face the world, and take control of their own lives.

Participants explore hip hop production using computer technology, midi controllers, beat machines, turntables, and recording equipment facilitated by experienced and professional hip hop artists who volunteer their time. The Initiative for Creative Arts gives youth an opportunity to experience hip hop culture from a fun, culturally rich, and interactive vantage point. All youth deserve an opportunity to pursue their passion and dreams.

WHAT WE DO

Our goal is provide direct access to quality arts and to support the voices of youth, their ideas, and initiatives by providing necessary programming, and mentoring.

  • SHESHOCK' HIP HOP ACADEMY

SheShock Hip Hop Academy is an introduction to beat making specifically for girls. Our girls learn technical skills, the art of beat making, and song writing. Our goal in SheShock' Hip Hop Academy is to empower girls and young women to tell their stories through music production and performance. SSHA provides a safe space where girls and young women can grow, learn, have fun, and develop confidence in their ability as creators, makers, and entrepreneurs.

  • BUILD A BEAT WORKSHOP

Starting with an overview of the equipment, we explain the process of beat making, and expose youth to the art of  beat making by assisting them with making their own beats. Build A Beat Workshop is an intro to the basics of drum programming, chopping samples, looping and adding effects with the use of midi-controllers and turntables to create fully arranged beats.

  • BEATS + RHYMES + POETRY

Beats & Rhymes & Poetry is used as a vehicle to help young people more fully develop their writing, technical, business, performance, and collaborative skills.

  • HIP HOP + SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Social Justice and Hip Hop Workshop looks at the ways in which the art of Hip Hop music and culture is involved in social justice issues and solutions and how it's used as a powerful and creative agent of change in the world and the communities which we live in.
